Sophia Kinsella, author of "Confessions of a Shopoholic", dies at 55
The British author Madeline Wickham, who wrote the Shopaholic book series under the pen name Sophia Kinsella, passed away on Wednesday, December 10th, 2025, in her home in Dorset, England.
The author was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of Brain cancer, in 2022. She had informed her readers and audience about the same through an Instagram post in 2024.
The news of her death was shared by her family on her Instagram account.
Ms Wickham first released "The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic" (released as “Confessions of a Shopaholic” in the United States) in 2000. She has since then published 10 books in the series.

The first two novels from the series were made into the 2009 film “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” featuring Isla Fisher. Another Kinsella title from 2003, “Can You Keep a Secret?”, was later adapted into a 2019 movie of the same name, starring Alexandra Daddario.
The author's fellow writers and mates have shared their deep condolences on her death.
Author Jodi Picoult said Kinsella “will be deeply missed,” and fellow novelist Adele Parks called her a “warm, wonderful woman” who “brought immense joy to the world.”
Parks added that “she’ll be profoundly missed but also celebrated, and she’ll live on in the hearts and minds of millions.”
Writer Jenny Colgan told BBC Radio 5 Live Drive that losing someone close can make it difficult to express who they truly were, but “anyone who has read a Sophie Kinsella book already knows — she was genuinely funny and incredibly warm.”
