Born in Rajnandgaon in then Madhya Pradesh (now in Chhattisgarh), Vinod Kumar Shukla’s literary career spanned more than five decades. He was known for his minimalist prose, poetic sensibility, and a unique narrative voice that brought depth, simplicity, and humanity to everyday life. His works included acclaimed novels such as Naukar Ki Kameez, Deewar Mein Ek Khirkee Rahati Thi, Khilega To Dekhenge, and Ek Chuppi Jagah, along with numerous poetry collections and essays that enriched Hindi literature.
In 2024, Shukla was honoured with the 59th Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honour, becoming the first writer from Chhattisgarh to receive this recognition for his outstanding contribution to Indian Literature.
With his passing, Hindi literature has lost a rare voice whose quiet, understated writing reshaped modern literary expression.
