Legendary Filmmaker Woody Allen to Publish First Novel at 89

Woody Allen, the legendary filmmaker behind cinematic classics such as Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Midnight in Paris, is now stepping into the world of fiction with his first novel, What’s With Baum?. The book is set to be published in September 2025 by Swift Press in the UK and Alianza Editorial in Spain.
Now 89, Allen brings his signature wit and neurotic humour to the page in a story that centres on Asher Baum, a middle-aged Jewish novelist and journalist grappling with professional irrelevance, sibling rivalry, and suspicions of his wife’s infidelity. The novel, rich with existential reflection and satire of the New York literary world, marks a new chapter in Allen’s storied creative life.
Publishers describe the book as “funny, clever, and wonderfully human,” echoing the tone that has defined Allen’s decades-long career in film and short fiction. Though he has previously published collections of humorous essays and a memoir, What’s With Baum? is his f
